BetterEat was founded by Mariza Louw B.Sc (Hons.) US RD(SA) RD(UK) more than 30 years ago. As a registered online dietician, I can also recommend specialised nutrition to optimise medical treatment and recovery.

How the sessions work

Your online nutritional journey begins with a one-to-one consultation, gauging what your needs are. It entails a a detailed look at lifestyle, diet, family history, prescription medication, supplementation, recent blood tests, as well as medical diagnosis.

Addressing what you're missing out on, and how to make improvements, both immediate and long-term, can lead to significantly improved outcomes. From there, we can arrange ongoing appointments with me as specialist online dietician to help devise therapeutic nutrition prescriptions and assistance with the steps to help you make desired changes and further revise and improve your nutrition plan on an ongoing basis. Further testing may be indicated and you will receive guidance to support this if required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Registered Dietitian do, and how can I help you?

This is a regulated health profession - very much like physiotherapy and medicine.

As a health professional trained to be proficient in the nutritional treatment and management of both disease conditions as well as the application of 'general' health and wellness, I have an in-depth knowledge of the impact of nutrition through all the life stages.

As part of the process of assessment and prescribing, I will draw on the changes humans experience as they go through life. My expert knowledge is based on an in-depth understanding of human physiology, pathology (how diseases develop), biochemistry (the chemistry inside your body) and genetics. Treatment will span the spectrum of the physical aspects of an individual's health, as well as psychological, lifestyle, and potentially environmental interactions.

Through a personalised approach, you will have access to targeted guidance and this will support your health and wellness goals and optimise the treatment of a disease or condition.

How can I, as an online dietitian, assist with weight management?

Unlike a weight loss club or app-driven weight loss program, addressing complex weight management issues requires an inside-out approach. Your weight loss journey should start with a thorough investigation and understanding of the underlying drivers contributing to your weight problems. Once the reasons for your struggles have been identified, a customised approach can be developed.

Depending on what you choose, this program may include practical help and guidance or signposting to the latest technology that will help and support your journey. You may be someone who genetically requires continued focus or perhaps a change in the type of exercise you do or what you choose to eat for breakfast. Perhaps your overall intake is too low, or medication may be influencing your metabolism. Once a nutritional diagnosis has been made, you will be able step outside of an endless cycle of dieting and deprivation. You can find a new way of eating that can work for you.

Do I need a dietitian if I don't have any specific health issues?

Absolutely! Nutritional therapy isn't just for individuals with a confirmed diagnosis or health concerns. Optimising nutritional quality can help anyone looking to improve their diet for better overall health, energy levels, and performance. Whether you want to enhance your athletic performance, improve your mood, or simply adopt healthier eating habits, a holistic dietitian can provide valuable guidance.
